Play and Learn Frequently Asked Questions

If you’re wondering whether a play and learn group is a good fit, you’re not alone. Many families aren’t quite sure what to expect or whether it’s “for them.”

Play and Learn groups are designed to be welcoming, flexible, and supportive for a wide range of families.

You might benefit from a Play and Learn group if you:

  • Are curious about your child’s development and what to expect at different ages
  • Want simple ideas to support your child’s learning through everyday play
  • Are looking for connection with other families in a similar stage of life
  • Sometimes feel unsure or alone in your caregiving decisions
  • Want your child to play, explore, and interact with other children
  • Are looking for opportunities to support your child’s early development

You don’t need to have a specific concern or reason to attend. Many families come simply to play, connect, and learn together.

What makes Ready by Five Play and Learn groups unique?

  • Play-based learning: Children learn through hands-on, child-led play that supports language, social skills, and early development.
  • Support for caregivers: As children play, caregivers can ask questions, gain insight into their child’s development, and learn simple ways to support learning at home.
  • Led by early childhood professionals: Each group is facilitated by trained professionals who help guide the experience, offer encouragement, and support both children and caregivers.
  • Connection and community: Playgroups create space to meet other families, share experiences, and build relationships.

Who can participate?

The Play and Learn groups that are supported by the Ready by Five Early Childhood Mileage are open to all families in Kent County with young children, typically ages birth to five.

Caregivers can include parents, grandparents, child care provider, relatives, foster parents, anyone caring for a young child.

Do I need to register or attend every session?

This depends on the partner offering the playgroup. GRCC, Bright Beginnings, and CTC are drop-in. Little Learners takes place in child care settings. Attendance is handled through their website. We recommend checking with the individual playgroup partner for details about schedules and participation. All are linked here.

What does it cost?

These Ready by Five-supported play and learn groups are no cost to families and made possible through Kent County’s Ready by Five Early Childhood Millage, which helps expand access to early childhood supports across the community.

What if my child doesn’t “sit still” or follow directions?

That’s completely okay. Playgroups are designed to be flexible and welcoming. Young children learn best through movement, exploration, and play. Every child participates in their own way. There is no “right way” to attend a playgroup.
