2024 Wrapped Up
(December 19, 2024) As 2024 comes to a close and we prepare for the opportunities ahead in 2025, we want to take a moment to reflect on the remarkable progress we have made together this year. At First Steps Kent, our mission to ensure that every child in our community has the opportunity to thrive is only possible because of your unwavering support and dedication.
This year, we celebrated several milestones that are reshaping the early childhood landscape in Kent County:
A Resounding Renewal of the Ready by Five Early Childhood Millage
Thanks to the incredible advocacy and belief in our shared vision, voters renewed the Ready by Five Early Childhood Millage with 59% approval. This renewal emphasizes the community's commitment to our youngest residents and families, ensuring continued investment in programs proven to make a difference.
Strategic Investment in Community Organizations
Through the Ready by Five Millage, we allocated $10 million to 28 community organizations, empowering them to continue their vital work in improving child health and school readiness. These partnerships are at the heart of our collective impact, enabling innovative solutions that meet the unique needs of children and families.
The Launch of Mainspring Early Care Alliance
With guidance from an 11-member advisory council of in-home child care business owners, we launched this transformative initiative to help child care providers thrive. By supporting the business side of child care, Mainspring Early Care Alliance strengthens the foundation of early care and education in Kent County.
Analyzing Opportunities: The Gap Analysis
Our Gap Analysis released earlier this year highlights the significant strides made in early childhood over the past six years while identifying critical areas where further action is needed. This essential tool will guide our efforts as we continue to close gaps and expand opportunities for all children.
Introducing the Impact Team
Recognizing the need for agile and thoughtful leadership, we established the Impact Team to align systems, shape policies, foster parent involvement, and secure funding for First Steps Kent and our partners. This team’s work is instrumental in addressing emerging challenges and leveraging opportunities to create meaningful change.
Collaborative Efforts with the Child Care Task Force
Behind the scenes, we worked closely with the Child Care Task Force established by the chair of the Kent County Board of Commissioners to identify sustainable and equitable solutions to improve access to and quality of child care across the county. First Steps Kent and county staff are providing many of the tools and information needed to advance the group’s work, which will continue in 2025.
As we reflect on these achievements, we are filled with gratitude for each of you who shares our vision and supports our mission. Your dedication fuels the progress we’ve made and inspires us to aim even higher as we move into 2025. Together, we will continue to create solutions that include all children, strengthen families, and build a brighter future for our community.
