6 ways to celebrate MLK Day with young children

On January 15, celebrate Dr. King's legacy with kids aged five and younger. Here are some kid-friendly ideas to make this day meaningful:

  1. Read books together. Kent District Library has a great list of children's books about MLK. Choose one or two to read to your child. Our favorites are Martin's Big Words and I am Martin Luther King, Jr
  2. Watch a Video Together. This Sesame Street MLK video is a great start!
  3. Print off and use these coloring pages, that include facts and quotes. Use this creative time to discuss why MLK Day and the Civil Rights Movement are important.
  4. Take some time to listen to MLK's "I Have a Dream" speech, and then talk to your child about their hopes and dreams for their future.
  5. Participate in Community Events. Head to the Calder Plaza for Silent March or check out this free event at the Holland Museum!
  6. As a parent, read this First Steps article about How to Talk to Young Children about Racism.

Gain valuable insights and learn where to start these important conversations with your kids.

Let's make this Martin Luther King Jr. Day a celebration filled with joy, learning, and meaningful connections with our little ones!
