About Us

dsc_00611 About UsFirst Steps is a non-profit organization in Kent County, Michigan, leading a community collaboration that is working to develop a system of support services for children, ages 0-5, and their families.  By investing in our youngest children, we can ensure a stronger, more prosperous future for all.

First Steps works in partnership with early childhood advocates, including parents, agency and business leaders, healthcare providers, educators, and philanthropic leaders.

Our community vision is that every young child in Kent County will enter kindergarten ready to succeed in school and in life. To achieve that, we believe the following conditions must be present:

  • The community understands the importance of early childhood and invests in the healthy development and early learning of young children.
  • Parents have the knowledge, skills, and opportunities to give their young children a great start in life.
  • Families have the relationships and resources they need to raise their young children, and their basic needs are met.
  • Young children have quality early learning experiences starting at birth.
  • Young children and their families receive the quality, comprehensive services and education they need to maximize their health.

First Steps works in close partnership with the Great Start Collaborative of Kent County, the Kent County Family & Children’s Coordinating Council, and the Kent Intermediate School District and has Memorandums of Understanding with those organizations.
